DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
|
The primary mission of the Department of Computer Science is to
prepare students for entry into the workforce and for graduate study when they major and minor
in departmental curricular offerings. A secondary mission is to ensure that all students
matriculating through the University have a basic understanding of the impact of computing /
information technologies upon society and the ability to cope with the infusion of these
technologies in the professional or work environments in which they will eventually function.
Members of the Department and departmental facilities are housed on the first floor of Nabrit
Center with the Department Office located in Room 100.
Joint Admissions Degree Offered at North
Harris College
B.S., Computer Science
To apply for
Joint Admission, a student must be enrolled at NHC and must meet TSU admission requirements. Just complete the TSU
Application for Undergraduate Admission. The TSU application fee is waived for Joint Admission students.
A student’s
entire record will be evaluated, including educational objectives and pattern of courses completed as a part of
the acceptance process into the Computer Science Department. Students should begin planning their academic careers
early by speaking with an academic advisor and by following the semester plans for their major.
Computer Science The primary mission of the Department of Computer Science is to prepare students to be proficient in the basic sciences
and mathematics and technologies in order for them to pursue careers in business, education, research, government, and
industry. Emphasis in the overall curriculum for this degree is placed on the development of software engineers through a large
networked client / server environment that supports both Microsoft (MS) WINDOWS and UNIX. Software development in the
client/server paradigm emphasizes the use of C language under UNIX and the use of JAVA and C++ under Microsoft (MS)
WINDOWS.
NHC
(1)The core curriculum hours as required by the university. The same course may not
be used to satisfy requirements in two different areas
(2)Completing the concentration of coursework for their major. No courses in
the major with grades below C can apply toward the degree.
In selecting a minor, as required for the completion of a B.S. in Computer Science,
students should seek detailed advisement from their designated advisors, because the
selection of minor courses in the core curriculum for the degree sought could impact
the total number of credits. In no case will students qualify for graduation at the
undergraduate level with fewer than 138 semester credit hours satisfactorily completed.
Student Responsibility
Students are urged to review the information presented in the Computer Science section
of the Undergraduate Catalog when planning their programs. Failure to read, understand
and follow the guidelines presented there could cause significant hardship and delays
in the academic progress.
